Chapter 16

The summer heat bore down as I stepped out onto the sidewalk, a thin sheen of sweat immediately coating my skin. Then Merrick’s hand touched mine, almost like a reflex, and our fingers laced together as he pulled me close. His grip was strong but gentle, and coupled with the emotional weight of the day, it sent an electrifying shiver coursing through my body.

I tried not to stare as we walked but couldn’t help noticing how his broad shoulders filled out his shirt, or the way he towered over me. I was filled with a deep longing as my gaze met his—my jumbled emotions were like a knot I didn’t know how to begin to untangle. His arm pressed lightly against mine, and I was aware of every movement and gesture he made.

Roman walked beside us with Emily on her back, her little legs exhausted from our long journey. An uncomfortable quiet filled the air around us as I attempted to make sense of the conflicting feelings Merrick’s touch evoked in me—I was terrified of my feelings for him.

“We should find a house to sleep in,” Merrick said, scanning the land with a determined gaze, his words pulling me from my thoughts. “The city is half a day away, and the sun is already setting behind the horizon.” The setting sun made me realize just how long I must have sat on the floor, being held by Merrick.

We strolled down the deserted street, our fingers intertwined. The scorching sun beat on us mercilessly, even as it dipped beneath the horizon. Sweat drenched my shirt and pants, making me feel as if I was walking in a rainstorm. Merrick’s eyes darted back and forth, searching for any hint of danger. I adored how he always put our welfare first, guarding me against everything that threatened us.

My breath rushed out of me in a long, ragged sigh. His touch was warm and reassuring, and he seemed to be trying to give me some of his strength with a simple gesture. “Is this place safe?” I asked him, my thoughts returning to the soldiers.

“We should be, provided we don’t draw any attention to ourselves. This city is huge, plenty of places to hide,” he said, as we navigated the streets. Merrick steered me towards a specific house, and I saw that his attention was drawn to the solar panels on the roof. Merrick stepped forward and wrapped his strong fingers around the door handle, ignoring the lock. The wood of the door splintered and cracked under his grip, falling away easily as the door opened. He gestured for us to enter inside.

The musty smell of antique furniture filled our noses, while dust danced in the air. Emily slid off Roman’s back and began to explore the place, a wide smile spreading across her face. She bounded across the room and eagerly made her way down the hall to find a bedroom, already stripping off her backpack.

Relief washed over me. I was happy to get out of the heat and couldn’t help but feel exhausted after today.
